Here’s to giving it my best shot, though! This is just one of those once-in-a-lifetime books with a story that is much bigger than the sum of its parts, and can’t be easily summarized or placed neatly into any one category. It’s rare that I find myself at a loss for words about a book, and while I’m sure I can come up with any number of adjectives to describe Chandler Klang Smith’s The Sky Is Yours, I doubt even that would be sufficient to give the full picture of the novel. ![]() This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own. Zami book6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Her books-among them Sister Outsider, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, and her Collected Poems-all sought to pierce "the tyrannies of silence." One of her greatest subjects was crumbling the twin pillars of racism and sexism: "Within this country, where racial difference creates a constant, if unspoken, distortion of vision, Black women have on one hand always been highly visible, and so, on the other hand, have been rendered invisible through the depersonalization of racism." ![]() And there are so many silences to be broken," she wrote in "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action." She fought especially hard to create space for Black and queer women in that movement, to "bridge some of those differences between us, for it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. Through her activism and work-speeches, essays, poems, journals-she was a tireless revolutionary in the fight for women's rights. Over the next sixty years, she became an undeniable icon, a self-styled "Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet" synonymous with intersectional feminism. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, Audre Lorde was born in 1934 in Harlem. ![]()

Vivek shraya poetry6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() So far, the response to the book has been tremendously positive. Vivek Shraya: Currently, I am teaching, touring, and plotting future projects. What do you have going on right now? Are you teaching in addition to promoting the book? What has the response to the book been like so far? The Rumpus: I’m excited to talk about your stunning new book, I’m Afraid of Men. As a trans man, I, too, am concerned with defying our culture’s toxic gender norms and was eager to talk with Vivek about the spaciousness to be gained for everyone when we speak out in defiance of those norms. I’m Afraid of Men was released earlier this fall from Penguin Random House. ![]() She is prolific across many outlets: music, film, visual art, poetry, prose, and genre-defying hybrid texts. ![]() She is an assistant professor in the creative writing program at University of Calgary. Vivek is an award-winning Canadian author, artist, and musician. ![]() It is a manifesto for a new kind of resiliency that allows for the toll of trans women’s daily navigation of a broken and dysfunctional masculinity to be witnessed by audiences who perhaps have interest in trans stories only when they fit with colonialist narratives of overcoming, triumph, and success. How do you survive-and thrive-when our culture’s gender policing penalizes failure to conform, often to destructive ends? Bullied as a boy for being too feminine and harassed as an adult trans woman for not being feminine enough, Vivek Shraya’s new book I’m Afraid of Menis a rallying cry against assimilation. ![]()

Trees of the emerald sea release date6/10/2023 ![]() His jokes are often perceived as quite gruesome and, though extremely friendly, he lacks empathy and insight. Ulaam has a sarcastic, morbid sense of humor (offering literal hands when giving assistance). “ I always say, when trouble troubles you, keep a stiff’s upper lip! Or several. Ulaam claims to be the least dangerous thing on the ship after being accused of eating people by Ann, he clarifies that he only eats dead ones and compares himself to an earthworm or bacteria. He does not often attempt to mimic humans or other animals, resulting in a completely unique personality, even among others of his kind. Similar to how VenDell goes around making deals with people for their bones once they die, Ulaam attempts to make offers for organs and limbs such as Tress’s eyes, kidney, tongue, brain, hands, and toes. Ulaam speaks with a refined but excitable voice often adding "hmmm?" to his questions. Hoid even claims that Ulaam is the best doctor he’s ever met. Ulaam, he is highly knowledgeable in medicine as he assumes the role of the ship’s surgeon. She finds the pure-black, pressed, buttonless suit more elegant than the uniforms her island's nobility wore. He dresses in a sharp suit (previously belonging to Hoid) of a style Tress is unfamiliar with. While aboard the Crow's Song, he maintains inhumanly sharp features, ashen grey skin, jet-black hair, and blood red eyes this is similar to a Dzhamarian from Sel. Being a kandra, Ulaam has the ability to dramatically alter his physical form. ![]() |
